Curriculum Vitae

My current research concerns the human brain’s motor control functions in the context of lower extremity (LE) and full body movements during upright standing and gait. I try to pursue two different but nevertheless related strands of research. The first is concerned with basic scientific questions regarding (i) dynamics of interlimb coordination during periodic LE movements and (ii) the interference between processes of cognition and the control of body balance in healthy volunteers. The second comprises a more applied approach to questions of functional recovery in chronic stroke patients following a regime of “bilateral lower extremity training with auditory cueing” (BLETRAC). In general, the research methodologies I currently employ include kinematic and kinetic movement data, but also the recording of EMG activity and since recently fMRI. My personal aims are to advance the understanding of motor control functions during a range of diverse human activities involving the LE and to apply this knowledge to the benefit of recovery following brain damage.
